53 insurance CEOs from 22 countries gather in Riga to discuss the future and ecosystem of insurance

{{ shortDate('2026-10-20 10:04:51') }}

For the first time, Riga is bringing together 53 insurance CEOs from 22 countries for the Vienna Insurance Group (VIG) CEO Conference, where industry leaders are discussing how artificial intelligence, changing healthcare needs and emerging risks are reshaping the future and ecosystem of insurance. The event is jointly hosted by VIG's three Baltic insurance companies Compensa Life, Compensa and BTA Baltic Insurance Company – which together represent the region's leading insurance group, with a combined market share of 26.7 % in 2025.

Artificial intelligence and digitalisation are changing how insurers interact with customers and handle claims, while evolving healthcare needs, sustainability challenges and emerging risks are creating new expectations for insurance protection. For people and businesses, these developments raise practical questions about how to prepare for risks, access suitable coverage and receive timely support when it matters most.

Peter Höfinger, Deputy CEO of Vienna Insurance Group, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board for Compensa Life, Compensa and BTA Baltic Insurance Company in Baltics: “At this very special CEO-Conference we looked at the key challenges facing our industry and the opportunities ahead from different angles. The discussions gave us a clear picture of how we evolve our Group’s strategic positioning and, above all, how we turn it into tangible benefits for our customers. Our sincere gratitude goes to our Baltic Insurance companies for their outstanding hospitality.”

The conference comes at a time of continued growth for VIG. In the first half of 2026, the Group recorded EUR 9.0 billion in gross written premiums, an increase of 5.4% year on year. Its evolve²⁸ strategy for 2026–2028 builds on the entrepreneurial independence and local expertise of its companies while strengthening cooperation and knowledge sharing across markets. Artificial intelligence, health and sustainability are also among the strategy's Group-wide priorities.

Sonja Raus, Member of the Managing Board of Vienna Insurance Group, Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board for Compensa Life, Compensa and BTA Baltic Insurance Company in Baltics. “What makes our Group so strong is the way Know-how flows across borders. By leveraging the expertise of our companies across the very different markets, we can adapt to customer needs faster and develop forward-looking solutions that make a real difference. We were delighted to hold the Conference in Riga.”

From first steps to market leadership in the Baltics

The Baltic region has become an important part of VIG's international business. Today, the Group holds the leading position in both life and non-life insurance in the region, reflecting the combined strength of its Baltic companies.

VIG entered the Baltic market in 2008 through the acquisition of Seesam Life Insurance, which later became Compensa Life. Its non-life insurance operations expanded in 2010, when Compensa entered the Lithuanian market as a branch of its Polish business, later becoming an independent company in 2015. The Group further strengthened its Baltic presence through the acquisition of BTA Baltic Insurance Company in 2016 and the integration of Seesam's non-life operations into Compensa, a process that began in 2018 and was completed in 2020. Together, these developments laid the foundation for VIG's strong regional growth and market leadership. Today, Compensa Life, Compensa and BTA each contribute their own expertise and strengths to the Group's success across the Baltics. The Baltics also rank second only to Austria in health insurance written premiums among VIG's markets, underlining the region's significance within the Group's health insurance business.

“Since 2008, Compensa Life has grown nearly 13-fold, becoming the leading life insurer in the Baltics. This achievement reflects not only our consistent growth, but also the trust of more than 300,000 customers across the region. Being part of Vienna Insurance Group allows us to combine strong local expertise with the knowledge and experience of companies across different markets. By working together, sharing best practices and embracing innovation, we can respond more effectively to evolving customer needs. Looking ahead, our priority remains to make life and health insurance more accessible and help people protect what matters most – their health, their families and their financial future,” says Tomas Milašius, Chairman of the Board and CEO of life insurance company Compensa Life Vienna Insurance Group.

Deividas Raipa, Chairman of the Board and CEO of non-life insurance company Compensa Vienna Insurance Group, says: “For Compensa, the past decade has been a period of remarkable growth and transformation. We have risen from eighth to third place in the Baltic insurance market, driven by the determination and expertise of our people. As we look ahead, our ambition goes beyond growth. As risk experts, we want to strengthen risk literacy across the Baltics, helping people and businesses better understand the risks they face, make informed decisions and build greater resilience. This is how we see our role evolving: protecting what matters today while helping society prepare for tomorrow.”

Oskars Hartmanis, Chairman of the Management Board of BTA Baltic Insurance Company: “For BTA, this year marks ten years as part of VIG. During this time, we have nearly tripled our gross written premiums and grown to serve more than 600,000 customers across the Baltics – a customer base equivalent to almost 10% of the region's population. The Group's expertise and support have played an important role in our development. But strong performance is not a reason to stand still. We believe the best time to challenge established ways of working is when a business is performing well. Our ambition is to keep evolving and make insurance simpler, more accessible and more human.”

Riga is the first city in the Baltics to host the VIG CEO Conference event, reflecting the Group's commitment to exchanging experience and strengthening cooperation across its markets including the Baltic region.
