If you are the injured party in a car accident, you will not have to go to the insurer of the at-fault car owner - BTA will settle the claim and pay the indemnity if the accident occurred in Latvia.
We will cover the cost of medical treatment, medicines, dressings and injuries for the driver and passengers as a result of the accident.
If the accident prevents you from continuing your journey, we will provide 24/7 assistance to detect the damage, carry out any repairs that is feasible on the road, and get you to your planned destination.

We will reimburse a person who has insured their vehicle with BTA, as well as for damages caused in a road traffic accident, medical expenses of third parties (other vehicle owners, cyclists, pedestrians) and damages caused to third parties' property.

If the accident prevents you from continuing, we will provide assistance to identify the damage and carry out any repairs that may be necessary in the road conditions:
- we'll replace the damaged wheel with the spare wheel in your car;
- we will start the engine with the help of the starting wires;
- fix the problems with the anti-theft device;
- let's open a locked door;
- unfreeze the door locks;
- unlock the automatic gearbox;
- fix the coolant leak and top up the coolant;
- tighten the engine drive belt;
- other minor repairs that can be carried out on the road.
Repairs will be free of charge, but the materials used are subject to an extra charge. - We'll supply fuel in case of sudden shortages
We'll supply fuel free of charge, but the fuel costs must be covered by you.
- Delivery to a car repair shop
If you are unable to continue your journey after the accident and the damage cannot be repaired in the road conditions, we will take your car to the nearest garage. If your car is under manufacturer's warranty, we will tow it to the nearest dealer's garage during the dealer's opening hours and to the nearest secure car park outside the dealer's opening hours.
- Taxi services
If you can no longer drive your car and it has been towed away by the emergency services, we will take you and your passengers to a specified location up to 30 km from the accident site. The maximum number of persons to be transported is nine.
- Rental car
If your car is towed away and repaired, we will replace it with a rental car within one working day while the damage that prevents your car from using the road is repaired. We will give you a free rental car for up to two days. The class of the rental car will be determined taking into account the class and equipment of your car but will not exceed the compact class.
- Development of the Agreed Statement
If you are involved in a minor accident and you are able to sign an Agreed Statement in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulations, you can get advice on developing an Agreed Statement by calling BTA Customer Service on 26 12 12 12. If necessary, we will help to draw up the agreed statement at the scene of the accident.
MTPL indemnity with your insurer
As a result of a road traffic accident, BTA will settle the case and pay compensation if the BTA client is the victim of a traffic accident and the accident occurred in Latvia.
Accident insurance for drivers and passengers
We will cover the cost of medical treatment, medicines and dressings in case of injury, as well as damages due to the injured person's loss of work capacity.
Legal assistance
If you have an accident on the road, we will provide legal assistance and reimburse the costs of legal proceedings and legal fees.
Factors such as your insurance history in Latvia, as well as in other Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area, are taken into account when calculating the price of an MTPL policy if you have informed BTA, provided BTA with the relevant certificate or uploaded it on the LTAB website. The insurance history certificate is taken into account regardless of the Member State in which it was issued and regardless of the nationality or previous residence of the owner or authorised user of the vehicle in the EU or EEA.
In the event of a traffic accident, the police must be called in the following cases:
- if more than two vehicles are involved in the accident;
- if people or animals are affected;
- if the circumstances of the accident cannot be agreed;
- if it is not clear or cannot be agreed which driver is at fault;
- damage to third party property;
- if the vehicle has suffered damage that makes it unfit to use the road.
If you are at fault in an accident, MTPL will not cover the damage to your vehicle. MTPL only provides protection to third parties who suffer from an accident caused by your vehicle.
If you are the victim and the person responsible is known, the MTPL of the at-fault party will cover the damage to you and your vehicle.
If you are a BTA customer and you caused the accident, submit the completed Agreed Statement to BTA as soon as possible, but no later than one year from the date of the accident, by filing an MTPL claim on My BTA website. If the accident was caused by another person, contact the insurer of the at-fault party by filing a third-party liability claim.
You can now also fill in the Agreed Statement electronically using the LTAB MTPL mobile app.
MTPL insurance is valid in the countries of the European Economic Area, the Swiss Confederation, Serbia, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Take a printout of your MTPL policy with you when you drive abroad, as traffic police in other countries do not have access to the Latvian MTPL policy register and will not be able to check whether you have an MTPL policy.
If you plan to drive to Albania, Iran, Israel, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Tunisia, Turkey or Ukraine, you will need to buy an international insurance contract or Green Card. You can subscribe for third-party liability insurance - monthly payments are made automatically using your linked payment card at the time of purchase. This makes it easier to pay for your MTPL insurance every month, without having to think about paying the bill every month.
What is the term of an MTPL subscription?
The MTPL subscription is open-ended. So, you don't have to think about buying new MTPL insurance every year.
Will the monthly payment be the same all the time?
We ensure that the monthly payment remains the same for at least 12 months after the purchase of the MTPL insurance subscription. If the monthly subscription fee changes after 12 months, we will inform you in good time and your customers can choose whether to continue or cancel their MTPL subscription.
How can I buy MTPL insurance with a subscription?
Enter the car number and the registration number or personal identification number of the owner in the MTPL calculator, read and accept the "Privacy Policy". Click "Get a quote". In the second insurance step, activate the "Monthly subscription" option.
How do you know if your MTPL insurance is active?
All information about the purchased MTPL subscription and insurance will be available on the My BTA customer portal.
How can I cancel my MTPL subscription?
The subscription to the MTPL insurance can be terminated on the BTA portal or by calling the BTA Customer Service at +371 26 12 12 12. The insurance subscription is automatically terminated simultaneously with the termination of the MTPL insurance contract (policy) in the cases provided for in Article 10 of the Law on Compulsory Third Part Liability Insurance of Owners of Motor Vehicles.
Is the MTPL insurance immediately terminated when I cancel my subscription?
Upon cancellation of the subscription for MTPL insurance, the insured vehicle will be insured until the end of the insurance period specified in the MTPL insurance contract (policy), unless one of the cases provided for in Section 10 of the Law on Compulsory Third Party Liability Insurance of Owners of Motor Vehicles has occurred.
Does the cover change if a subscription is chosen?
If you choose to insure your vehicle on a subscription basis, your car is insured on the same terms as if you had chosen to insure your vehicle for a fixed period.
Can I subscribe to insurance if I have several vehicles?
Yes, of course! You will need to create a separate subscription for each of your vehicles.
MTPL insurance is compulsory insurance that covers the damage you can cause to others in road traffic. CASCO is a voluntary insurance that protects your vehicle against theft, damage or total loss.
