New year resolutions – to get rid of get rid of extra kilograms, stick to a healthier diet and quit smoking
BTA Baltic Insurance Company (BTA), with the start of the new year, conducted a survey regarding people’s new year resolutions. The collected data indicate that 73% of the surveyed women are determined to get rid of extra kilograms in the new year, stick to a more balanced and healthier diet. Meanwhile, to start on a path of more active lifestyle are about 41% of men, while 36% are about to quit smoking.
People's commitment to a more active lifestyle becomes a topic with the beginning of each new year. The information collected by BTA indicates that employers increasingly include sports coverage in their Health insurance policies at the end of the year.
Funny as it is, the most popular commitment for the new year is to increase the athletic activities in order to lose the weight gained during the holidays. Such promises are made right after the holidays - in January. During this period, a particularly high interest is observed with office staff in the finance and technologies fields. With interest in various types of physical activities increasing, the number of gym passes also rises, as well as the number of people who prefer physical activities in the open air.
However, no matter how sincere the promises of being more active and healthier, as soon as in February there is a recession, with the number of gym-goers shrinking by nearly a quarter. According to BTA data, people have become more active in March last year, when the number of gym passes had a rise by 27%.
“We have observed that the New Year’s resolutions most often are based on the wish to change the habitual daily rhythm, to feel better and to get rid of bad habits. In the beginning of the year, the survey on New Year’s resolutions conducted by BTA shows that the majority of ladies consider visiting sports clubs, while men are more focused on quitting smoking, although the reality is that a large part of them come to fulfilling this vow to themselves just when spring is nearing, when the thick winter clothes come off and stashed deep in closets and the people around can appraise the effort made. This tendency suggests that selection of a Health insurance policy should be based on long-term planning, which means inclusion of the cover of exercising in gym also when it is not a plan for days within an arm’s reach,” suggests Ivo Danče, BTA Baltic Insurance Risks Underwriting Department Director.
