Even though new year’s festivities went on rather carefree, there were still some minor and major accidents occurring throughout the long holidays. BTA Baltic Insurance Company AAS (BTA) over the week following Christmas received almost 100 insurance claims from clients, who faced some tough times during their end-of-the-year celebration activities.

As usual, the largest number of injuries was sustained in mundane, day-to-day situations. Some injured persons slipped on icy pavements or stairs and suffered severe bruises or bone fractures. Injuries were caused by people accidentally hitting themselves against objects like the foot of their own bed or running into some other furniture at home due to carelessness. Like there was one injured client of ours, who slipped and fell while going to sauna, and he fell onto the metal grid of the hot rocks in the sauna. He hurt his head badly, sustained a deep wound and lost consciousness. Moreover, he injured his finger and suffered several major bruises while falling. One more insured person experienced his festive times starting off on the wrong foot altogether, because he suffered injuries while decorating premises; he hit his head against a metal pipe and smashed his forehead.

Furthermore, even completely usual situations turned into unpleasant experiences. Two injured people poured boiling water over themselves while making dinner.

As has become customary, sports have also contributed to statistics – both winter and indoor training. Several injured persons sustained their injuries while skiing, while others attended basketball and football training indoors and it did not end well.

Accidents lie in wait for us in the most mundane situations while we are engaged in what appears to be our usual activities that we have already done many times before. However, due to carelessness or unfortunate turn of events people sometimes sustain injuries. To avoid physical pain becoming accompanied with financial loss, we encourage you to take care of a personal accident insurance policy”, recommends BTA Insurance Claims Handling Department Kārlis Liepiņš.
