Fire, water and thieves – worst enemies of company data warehouse
Fire, flooded premises, stolen computers and a thunderbolt as well are the main threats to the company computer systems, and those misfortunately cause important company data loss. Accident history disproves the myth that the data are safe in the company premises that is why common good practice suggests storing at least one reserve copy in another safe place, for instance, cloud storage.
In the course of the last two years, a few score of companies submitted applications for insurance indemnity disbursement, related to damage to or loss of computers and servers, - according to information summarized by BTA Baltic Insurance Company (hereinafter – BTA). Data repositories encounter a large number of threats. The largest damage is caused by fire and theft, resulting in total loss of information stored in database devices. While thieves usually choose laptops in office premises or employee cars and therefore steal all the information stored therein, fire destroys the servers as well.
“Applications for insurance indemnity disbursement show that equipment, wherein the information important for the business is stored, is not subjected to frequent endangerment. However, when the accident does occur, it throws the company of its stride and prevents full-fledged company operations. While insurance facilitates fast restoration of infrastructure, data lost might never be recovered, and even insurer is helpless such be the case”, - says BTA Insurance Claims Handling Department director Kārlis Liepiņš.
Nevertheless, last years were marked by company managers’ increased awareness about data safety, fewer than all protect themselves from data loss. Results of the survey “Manager’s digital portrait” conveyed with the assistance of accounting and business management system, Tildes Jumis, show that 72% of companies made data copies last year. It means that there is more than a quarter of companies that risk losing information important for the business.
What makes the situation even worse is the fact that only about a half of company managers displays interest in the opportunities provided by the latest technologies. To put it in perspective, many are not even aware of safe ways of data storage.
“Upon elaboration of the company’s data movement system, some companies did not even think to consider that company infrastructure might suffer a total loss. Humanwise, it makes sense, because nobody cares to attribute the worst-case scenario. However, in the name of company survival, storage of all the important data should be planned carefully. It is easiest to entrust a safe and top quality cloud storage service provider with storage of important data, who will undertake full responsibility for the data and store the copies in different locations. You may access your data in a cloud storage in real time and from any location, as well as reserve data copies are made automatically and the user him/herself does not need to do anything. In case you lack opportunity to do so, you should at least make reserve copies of important data regularly and store them outside your office premises”, explains business development manager of Tildes Jumis, Viesturs Slaidiņš.
