BTA will compensate losses incurred by travellers in the Middle East
BTA will compensate losses incurred by travellers in the Middle East – claims can be submitted for policies purchased before the 1st of March.
BTA Baltic Insurance Company AAS (hereinafter – BTA) will compensate losses incurred by travellers in the Middle East who purchased travel insurance policies and travelled to these countries before March 1, 2026. Losses will also be covered if travel insurance was purchased before March 1, but the person did not travel due to changes in plans caused by military conflict. The countries covered by the insurance include Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Syria, and Lebanon.
In total, BTA offers three different levels of travel insurance policies – "Essential," "Optimal," and "Gold" – which, depending on the customer's wishes and needs, include different levels of insurance coverage to compensate for losses such as medical expenses due to acute illness or exacerbation of chronic illness, as well as accidents. Travel insurance also covers expenses related to delayed or cancelled flights, lost or damaged luggage, etc.
"Although travel insurance terms and conditions stipulate that war or military operations are exceptions in which the insurer does not cover losses, BTA has now decided that travel insurance policies purchased for trips to Middle Eastern countries before the 1st of March of this year will cover losses in accordance with the insurance coverage included in the selected program. Even in cases where the policy was purchased before the 1st of March, but the customer has not travelled to any of the Middle Eastern countries because the military conflict has caused changes in travel plans, losses will be compensated in accordance with the specific insurance coverage," informs Ivo Danče, Director of the BTA Insurance Claims Department.
However, for BTA travel insurance policies purchased after the 1st of March, 2026, when information about military operations in the Middle East had already been publicly announced, the travel insurance terms and conditions will apply, in which the impact of war, invasion, hostile acts by a foreign country, or military operations on the course of the trip are considered uninsurable events. This means that, for example, changes to a trip due to airspace closure (related to military activities) would be considered an uninsurable event.
