BTA: Top 3 of stolen cars in 2019 – BMW, Volvo and Toyota
BTA: Top 3 of stolen cars in 2019 – BMW, Volvo and Toyota
In 11 months of this year, car thieves have given their top preference to BMWs, Volvos and Toyotas, while in a period of seven years, the top of stolen cars includes these brands – Toyota, Audi, BMW, Volkswagen and Honda, with the total of insurance indemnities disbursed for car thefts exceeding 3.4 million euros, according to BTA Baltic Insurance Company AAS (hereinafter – BTA) summary of data on CASCO insurance claims made.
Car thieves lately, in the recent years, most often have preferred medium class cars, on the rise is both the number of their thefts, as well as the volume of disbursed indemnities, while the total volume of indemnities within a period of seven years has been rather different across these years – for instance, the anti-record was registered in 2017, when the amount of disbursed indemnities exceeded 726 thousand euros, whereas the smallest volume of indemnities disbursed was registered in 2013, when the amount disbursed for car thefts was 311 thousand euros, describes the situation Kārlis Liepiņš, Director of BTA Insurance Claims Handling Department.
The largest CASCO insurance indemnity disbursed by BTA within a period of 11 months was more than 30 thousand euros for a Toyota Land Cruiser, an nearly 15 thousand euros were disbursed for a theft of a Honda CRV.
The collected statistical data indicate that most often thieves give preference to medium class cars, including Volvo XC60, Honda CRV and also – BMW X5, which in prior studies was recognized as a car retaining the largest proportion of its worth – 42% in the fifth year since purchase.
Top10 of most stolen cars this year in 11 months include BWM X5 xDrive30D, Volvo XC60, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Avensis, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Passat and Subaru Legacy.
BTA’s advice to vehicle owners is to select an appropriate CASCO insurance cover for their car, to install additional security systems and security-mark the parts of their cars, as the statistics indicates a steady rise of car parts as well.
Not unfrequently, victim to car thieves fall cars with the Keyless system without any additional security systems, although, the number of cars with reinforced security keeps growing, making thefts scarcer and more challenging to accomplish. CASCO insurance is a good idea to avoid covering expenses out of your pocket in a case of car theft, reminds K. Liepiņš.
